The forest is in constant renewal. If an old stump gets in the way of a growing tree, it just puts its root over the top and envelops it!
I just loved the irony of this picture with the big forest management tractor in the background that is in the process of cutting down trees. It’s as if the new sapling is saying, “Hah, do your worst but I will still be here when you are long gone!”
Forest renewal also happens with a proliferation of Shelf Fungus (so named for obvious reasons) that slowly consumes the old wood and returns its nutrients to the soil.
